MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) -

The longest serving chancellor in the history of the University of Wisconsin-Stout plans to retire.

Charles W. Sorensen served as chancellor for 26 years and plans to leave Aug. 15, 2014.

The UW System Board of Regents will launch a national search for his successor, with plans to name the new chancellor by the time he leaves.

In a statement, Sorensen says it was a privilege to serve as chancellor. He said he would work with the school in its search for the next chancellor.

In the 26 years under Sorensen, enrollment rose risen 31 percent and the school has added 24 more undergraduate majors. They've also added five new buildings, two major additions and seven major renovations.

Sorensen was the school's sixth chancellor.
