UPDATE: Road crews clear highways for morning commute

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) - The winter weather made for some tough driving conditions Tuesday.

Many slide-offs were reported, as well as some crashes.

The work for highway crews is just beginning.

"Stay back from our trucks. We have a lot of things going on inside of them, we want to make sure people don't crowd them because it just adds to the stress of our drivers," said Marathon County Highway Department Supervisor Dan Raczkowski.

Raczkowski says the plows will be out all night Tuesday and into the morning on Wednesday.

He says he wants drivers to keep some things in mind.

"Remember when you're driving, it's a community event. Your actions affect everyone else around you," Raczkowski.

State patrol officers agree.

"Nobody is going to plan to get into an accident but if you do, having a seat belt on greatly reduces your chances of injury, so we stress wearing a seat belt," said State Patrol Lt. Steve Krieger.

Officers say slow down, give yourself extra time and don't follow too closely.

"I see it all the time when people are tailgating on slippery roads and they're just asking for trouble," said Raczkowski.

"Be patient, especially during peak travel times," said Krieger.
