Authorities warn there's no such thing as safe ice

With snow in the forecast and ice forming, winter sports are gearing up. That means it's time to start thinking about how to stay safe this season.

Marathon County Sheriff's Officers say if you're headed out on the ice it's important to check the strength of it first. They recommend staying close to shore and avoiding any open water.

"We have changing weather conditions as well so I would recommend that people be familiar with their areas, pay attention to the weather conditions and check their ice conditions before they head out," said Lt. Kevin Gray.

Authorities warn there's no such thing as safe ice and also recommend checking with others before heading out.

"You can check with some of the local people if you're not familiar with the area, you can get information from resorts, guides, friends or family members that are familiar with the area to see what information they have about the ice conditions," explained Gray.

Authorities say snow can make conditions worse by making it seem like there's more ice than there really is.
