El Salvador looks at ex-president, Taiwan donation

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) -

El Salvador's president says he asked his attorney general to investigate a $10 million donation that Taiwan made 10 years ago to the Salvadoran government during the administration of then President Francisco Flores.

President Mauricio Funes says the complaint is based on U.S. Treasury Department information received by prosecutors in September. He doesn't say how he got the information.

The attorney general's office confirmed the investigation Tuesday but said it could not provide details.

Funes says the report indicates Flores endorsed checks totaling $10 million from a Taiwanese government account between 2003 and 2004 that were intended for a Salvadoran government agency registering land for poor farmers. He says the money never reached the agency.

Flores could not be reached for comment but denied any wrongdoing to a local newspaper.
