Students practice welding skills in Wausau

Wausau West students put their welding skills to the test Tuesday.

It's a chance for them to learn more about the manufacturing industry.

Schuette Metals in Rothschild brought its virtual welder to the high school.

School leaders say more than 100 students tried the tool. They say bringing the virtual welder is a way for students to get some hands-on experience.

"We feel we do a good job presenting the knowledge and skills required of a welding career, but then what this does is it promotes it as really a family-sustaining career that they can be looking forward to," said Wausau West high school teacher Theran Peterson.

Company leaders say the virtual welder will eventually visit 8 area high schools. They say its next stop is Marathon City.
