ATHENS (WAOW) – An early morning barn fire Wednesday killed 50 cattle, including 40 milk cows, Athens Fire Chief Ronald Lavicka said.
The fire at the Mark Mueller Dairy Farm about eight miles east of Athens erupted about 7:30 a.m. and destroyed the barn, Lavicka said. About ten other cows kept in a separate barn nearby were not hurt.
Mueller had gone to work in Wausau and was not at home at the time, the fire chief said. A neighbor reported the blaze.
Mueller declined comment late Wednesday afternoon as firefighters continued to monitor the smoldering and smoking ruins.
The fire started on the north end of the barn, which is used for milking, but the cause remained under investigation, Lavicka said.
