Habitat for Humanity goes green in Wisconsin

River Falls (WAOW) -

The sounds of construction abound at the growing Eco-Village in River Falls, Wisconsin.  And though on the exterior it looks like a typical development site, there's more than meets the eye.

"It's been just amazing to have my first home that I own, so I'm really excited," homeowner Charles Barbee told Newsline 9.

Barbee says he is grateful for Habitat For Humanity.  That is the non-profit group using volunteers and donations to launch an unprecedented 18-home neighborhood centered around the concept of green energy.

"Net zero means you produce as much as you use," Dave Engstrom said.

Engstrom is part of the leading forces behind the construction idea.  His work is yielding homes built with roofs of solar panels, thermal pane windows, and insulated walls 12 inches thick.

"This is going to be the most energy efficient neighborhood in the entire country," Engstrom continued.

Construction began in Spring 2012.  So far six of the 18 homes are completed.
