DNR recognizes Mosinee recycling project

MOSINEE (WAOW) - A project in Mosinee to sort through three tons of garbage to highlight how much of it could be recycled has received an "excellence in recycling" award from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The city partnered with students at Mosinee High School and sorted the garbage in October 2012, looking for items banned from the landfill and other items with recycling potential.

The project went above and beyond DNR expectations for improving recycling efforts, the agency said Thursday in announcing 50 local governments and the Ho-Chunk Nation that were honored for superior recycling events in 2012.

The recognition program is designed to increase communities' interest in recycling, said Ann Coakley, the DNR's water and materials management program director.

Mosinee leaders told us that of the three tons of trash they sorted through during the 2012 project, about 20 percent was recycled.
