Wausau man charged in gun store burglary

WAUSAU (WAOW) – A 28-year-old Wausau man who has been jailed more than a year has been charged with five felonies in a 2012 burglary of a Wausau gun store, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Matthew McLeod is accused of stealing four guns from Condition One with an accomplice who was fatally shot by police in Eau Claire in October 2012, Marathon County Assistant District Attorney Lance Leonhard said.

McLeod was charged Wednesday with four counts of theft and one count of burglary with a dangerous weapon, according to Marathon County online court records.

His preliminary hearing was set for Dec. 16.

According to Leonhard, McLeod has been jailed for months in Marathon County after being charged with seven felonies in October 2012, including four counts of theft.

A trial in that case had been scheduled to begin Dec. 16 but was postponed last month when prosecutors told a judge they had hundreds of pages of federal law enforcement records to review, court records said.

Leonhard said the charges in the Condition One burglary were delayed because the investigation was complicated.

Up until now, no one was charged,” he said. “It was quite a detailed investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.”
