Altoona man sentenced for strangling woman

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -- -

An Altoona man has been sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for strangling a woman family members say was his cultural wife.

Forty-two-year-old Ying Xiong pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree reckless homicide in the death of Panhia Vue. Her partially-burned body was found in a shed on the couple's property last June. An autopsy showed Vue's cause of death was suffocation by strangulation.

Xiong was arrested after a chase that ended in Mosinee.

The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reports family members told police Xiong and Vue were culturally married and had verbal and physical confrontations in the past.

Xiong was also sentenced Thursday in Eau Claire County to 15 years of extended supervision following his release from prison.
