Free turkeys for veterans

Thanksgiving may be over, but there's still turkey. For some veterans, this turkey is free.

"To help give back to the community we do something like this the turkey giveaway," said Jeff Morgan, the president of the Man of Honor Society.

The society handed out 500 free turkeys Saturday at the VFW in Wausau.

"It's a mission complete they're all gone," said Morgan.

They were gone in only 45 minutes. The group puts the order in right before the holidays.

"When they're delivered, we take care of them until the day they're handed out," said Morgan.

But they weren't ready for the amount of veterans that came.

"If I were prepared for this many people we could've held a meeting," said Morgan.

About three dozen volunteers fought through the cold. Debbie Okrzesik is one of them. She says events like this have a special place in her heart.

"My father was a marine back in the Korean days," said Okrzesik of Wausau.

She volunteers to give back to veterans like her father.

"So happy and grateful and thoughtful for what the members of our military do and it often goes unrecognized," said Okrzesik.

This year's hand out was different than previous years. The group planned it on Pearl Harbor Day.

"Usually it's just a dart thrown on the calendar, but today it seemed to work out great this way," said Morgan.

Organizers want to give to those veterans who have given our country so much.

"The men and women of this country deserve everything they can get and no matter how large or small, veterans can give back to veterans,” said Morgan. “I'm sure it's all appreciated."

Funds for the turkeys come from raffles the Man of Honor Society held. They say they're excited to do the turkey hand out again next year.
