Marathon County introduces new jail administrator

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -

After almost a year of uncertainty and criticism, the Marathon County jail now has a new leader.

Sandra La Du-Ives is the new Marathon County jail administrator. She was introduced by Sheriff Scott Parks during a news conference Monday morning. La Du-Ives comes from Oneida County where she was the jail administrator there since April. Previously, she held the role as the assistant jail administrator for almost four years.

Marathon County jail administrator position was open after Bob Dickman resigned in April.

County officials say Dickman put his resignation in after a jail attack. In March, authorities say an inmate attacked two corrections officers. Officer Julie Christensen, 36, was critically injured.

Since the attack, questions were raised about the safety of the Marathon County jail. A special task force comprised of community members was created to take a look at jail security and make recommendations for changes.

"Having her in place will help us gain that forward momentum that I've been talking about and get us in the right direction," said Sheriff Scott Parks.

La Du-Ives says she can relate to professional hardships. In February, the Oneida County Jail Administrator was killed in a house fire.

"I walked in in the morning and was told, run the jail. I was definitely not prepared to be in that position that day," recalled La Du-Ives.

She says it was her job to pick up the pieces.

"Being able to continue the operations, take hold of everything and get things running smoothly would be the thing that has prepared me the most," said La Du-Ives.

Now, she'll be put to the test as she works to help turn around a jail that's been under the microscope.

La Du-Ives was selected out of dozens of candidates from around the nation.
