EAGLE RIVER (WAOW) – Some 400 miles of state-funded snowmobile trails in Vilas County officially open at 6 p.m. Friday, the county's park and recreation administrator said Monday.
The opening is about four days earlier than the targeted date, Dale Mayo said.
“We have had about the perfect combination of snow and cold weather. It is very rare that we have that combination where we open this early,” Mayo said. “We may have had four years in the last 20 that we would open by the 15th.”
Friday is Dec. 13.
All the state-funded trails will open with the exception of Phelps trails, Mayo said.
Mayo estimated most trails are packed with a base of 8 inches to 10 inches of snow, providing what he described as good riding conditions with some rough, icy patches in low-lying areas.
The state-funded trail system connects with another 250 miles of what are known as club trails that cross lakes. Some will be open by Friday and some will not, Mayo said.
