Antique autos saved in Merrill garage fire

MERRILL (WAOW) – Some antique automobiles escaped major damage in a garage fire that started near a wood burning stove, the Merrill Fire Department said Tuesday.

Shift Commander Steven Hintze said the fire on Short Road in rural Merrill erupted about 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The cause is believed to be the radiant heat from the wood burner and chimney,” Hintze said.

Two automobiles, numerous tools and some snow removal equipment kept in the two-car garage suffered smoke and water damage, he said in a statement.

Firefighters quickly deployed salvage tarps over the vehicles to prevent further damage,” he said.

A passerby noticed the fire and alerted the homeowner, giving firefighters enough time to mount an "aggressive interior attack" and quickly extinguish the fire, Hintze said.
