Frozen pipes a threat when cold sets in

Wausau Water Works is highlighting awareness about frozen pipes.

The department wants to remind homeowners that they are responsible for frozen pipes in their homes or businesses.

"Vacant homes and businesses are the biggest problems. What happens is they shut off the heat but fail to turn off the water and have the fixtures winterized. Then the water freezes in the pipes and they crack,"  said Wausau Water Superintendent Dick Boers.

With the bitter cold, Boers suggests homeowners in occupied homes make sure warm air is circulating near the water pipes.

He recommends a minimum temperature of 50 degrees.

The cost of repairing water damage can run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
