Wausau considers tab for stray cats

WAUSAU (WAOW) -     Wausau City Council Finance Committee members say they aren't ready to commit tens of thousands of dollars to the Humane Society to pay for stray cats.

In October the Marathon County Board voted to no longer pick up the tab to care for stray cats at the Humane Society. Now the Humane Society is looking for municipalities to foot the bill. But some Wausau aldermen say that bill is too high.

The Humane Society is asking Wausau to pay $80,000 to take care of stray cats in 2014.

Humane Society leaders say they took care of 374 cats from the city in 2012, each one costing $332.

Tuesday night, council members voted to sign a letter of intent to work with the Humane Society on the problem, but they did not commit to the proposed $80,000 contract.

"I think what we are asking is that we find a solution to the problem before more and more money to address that problem," said David Oberbeck, District 9 alderman.

"I want to maintain a positive relationship with the city and I hope that we will come to an agreement on the handling of stray cats for the residents of the city of Wausau," said Linda Berna-Karger, Human Society board president.

With the letter of intent, the city is agreeing to pay the Humane Society to take care of stray cats through mid-January. Humane Society leaders say if they do not reach an agreement with the council before then, they cannot continue to take care of the cats after January 14.
