UPDATE New UWSP classroom to cost $75 M

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) – The state Building Commission chaired by Gov. Scott Walker on Wednesday approved money for the design of a new $75 million chemistry/biology building at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Also approved was a new three-story student center at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse to replace the Cartwright Center.

The UW-Stevens Point project will include 12, 55-seat classrooms and two, 100-seat lecture halls to address a shortage of classrooms on campus, the governor said in a statement.

The existing science building is inadequate because of functional and infrastructure limitations, the statement said.

The nearly 170,000 square foot classroom building will include laboratory and research space, a herbarium and animal care facilities, the university said.

The existing Science Building was built in 1963.

The new complex will be the first free-standing, new building at UW-Stevens Point in 40 years, the university said.

Construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2015, with completion set for summer of 2017.

The eight-member building commission includes mostly state lawmakers.
