Wausau officials: Too cold for salt

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Wausau Public Works officials say it is so cold that salt alone will not work to treat icy roads.
Instead, crews have been using a sand and salt mix this week.
They say salt alone stops melting ice when temperatures drop below 10 degrees.
The sand adds traction for drivers
Officials say they don't want to melt the ice just for it to refreeze on the roads in these temperatures.
