Second Rhinelander school closes due to illness

Posted:
Crescent Elementary is the second school hit hard by illness in the Rhinelander School District. Pelican Elementary closed Thursday for the same issue.
Crescent allowed parents to pull their children from classes as a part of a voluntary closing.
Wilma Mullins, a parent of a Crescent student, says she pulled her son out of classes just to be safe.
"Our son hasn't been sick," said Mullins. "We've been fortunate, but we thought it just was best to come and pick him up. [It's] just precautionary to make sure he was ok and not sick."
The school says by the end of the day 24 percent of the students went home sick or had called in absent that day.
The voluntary closing was designed to reduce the spread of the illness.
"The illness is at [Pelican Elementary] and we're still having sick children come to [Crescent's] office," said Rhinelander School District Nurse Kerri Schmidt. "As we speak there are still sick children coming. It only makes sense to offer parents a voluntary removal of their child from school."
The sick students are experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, coughing, and in some cases nausea or vomitting.
The school is asking those who are sick to not to return to classes until 48 hours have passed since their symptoms have gone away.
Officials say classes are expected to resume on Monday for both Crescent and Pelican.
