Who stole baby Jesus?

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A Wausau church is looking for answers in a crime you might expect from the Grinch.

Salem Lutheran Church on 6th Street is missing its baby Jesus. Police say somebody snatched it from the manger.

Pastor Richard Russow is disappointed.

"I saw footprints leading up to our nativity scene and went to follow them and saw that Jesus was missing," said Russow.

Wausau police say the theft happened late last week.

"It's kind of a senseless crime to go and take part of their Christmas scene. It belongs to the church and it's not causing anybody any harm," said Wausau Police Department Lt. Nathan Pekarske.

After the theft, the pastor changed the sign outside the church to read 'Who stole Christ from Christmas?' It's meant to be a figurative question, but it now has a very literal meaning.

"The reason for Christmas is to celebrate Christ’s birth. Whether it involves the giving of presents or not is really not the point," said Russow.

Wausau police say this type of crime tends to happen every year.

"I think we do have reports throughout the area where someone is playing a prank or someone has nothing better to do and they're walking by and they think it would be funny to do it," Pekarske told Newsline 9.

Officers say they have no suspects.

"There wasn't really any evidence left at the scene," Pekarske added.

Pastor Russow says he told his congregation about what happened. Now, he says he's waiting for the thief to do the right thing.

"Number one, I would like the person to repent to that sin and in their repentance, perhaps return that property," said Russow.

All to have baby Jesus back in the manger for Christmas.

If you have any information on what happened, Wausau police would appreciate a call.
