Northwoods schools reopen after illness

School is back in session at two elementary schools in the Northwoods.

Last week the halls of Pelican Elementary School in Rhinelander were quiet. This week, they're a little louder.

"It takes a little time. You got to pay attention to it and rest," said Principal Martha Knudtson.

Pelican Elementary school re-opened after an illness spread, quickly.

"Body aches, sore throat, that kind of thing," said Knudtson.

Just down the road at Crescent Elementary, the same story.

"Vomiting, nausea, headache, to low-grade fevers," said school district nurse Kerri Schmidt.

But classes there are also back in session. And educators say the time away has done everyone some good.

"It's helping now because we have the sick kids at home," said Schmidt.

School district leaders say both schools and school buses were cleaned during the weekend. It was all in an effort to wipe out the sickness.

"We have little pockets of students with the flu, but as far as this magnitude, I haven't seen it like this," said Schmidt.

But while things are better, the schools still want students and staff to stay healthy.

"We practice good hand washing, using Kleenex, covering your cough, all those things," said Knudtson.

"We know there's something out there whether its influenza or a stomach virus and we need to stop the transmission," added Schmidt.

That means parents are still being asked to keep their children home if they're sick.
