UN shoots at rebels in Mali, injures 2

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - Residents in the troubled Malian city of Kidal say U.N. peacekeepers opened fire several times on Tuareg rebels and injured two of them. The aggressive measures follow a suicide attack this weekend that killed two peacekeepers.

Kidal resident Ibrahim Ag Ahmadoune told The Associated Press that Chadian peacekeepers opened fire Monday on a rebel truck, injuring one person, and then twice on rebels travelling by motorcycle, hitting another person in the foot.

U.N. spokesman Frederic Fath confirms the shooting and says the rebels failed to respect orders to slow down or stop.

He says the U.N. has stepped up security. The rebels signed an accord this summer agreeing that their men should not be out on the street, but until now the peacekeepers have done little to enforce it.
