Weston man had "hundreds" of child porn pics

WAUSAU (WAOW) – A 51-year-old Weston man loaded hundreds of pictures of child pornography on his smart phone, an investigator said Tuesday.

Thomas Beer was charged with 48 counts of felony possession of child pornography following a Dec. 10 search of his apartment, according to the criminal complaint.

Capt. Clay Schulz of Everest Metro Police said the investigation started in late November with a referral from a child crimes unit in Fairfax, Va., that learned of possible child pornography images related to a Microsoft account.

It was traced to a phone owned by Beer, who apparently had loaded the images in February while he was in Virginia, Schulz said.

I know there are hundreds of photographs. They are very disturbing,” Schulz said.

Beer was charged last week with eight counts of possession of child pornography, court records said.

The criminal complaint was amended and another 40 counts were added Tuesday, according to court records. Each count involves one photograph.

Marathon County Circuit Judge Mike Moran ordered Beer jailed on $75,000 cash.

There was no attorney listed for Beer in online court records.

Beer is to return to court Wednesday to determine if he qualifies for a public defender. His preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 27.

The maximum punishment for each count of possession of child pornography is 25 years in prison.
