Veterans get surprised with trip to D.C.

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Two Wausau veterans got a big surprise Tuesday afternoon.

Newman Catholic Elementary students presented the men with boarding passes for the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

The students sang a song of blessing and a Christmas tune for the pair.

Students then lined up to shake hands with veterans.

The men said hearing the students say thank you meant a lot.

"I don't recall that when we came back from overseas before that people were there to say thanks. But I notice now that when we go outside or when people find out that I've been in the service, now they say thanks," said Ray Knippel, who served in Korea and Vietnam.

School leaders say students collected coins on Veterans Day.

The 300 students raised more than $1000 to help pay for the flight.
