Survey: Wausau students optimistic about future, not about govt.

A new survey sheds some light on what students in our area think about our government.

They have a lot of optimism, but not about everything.

The students in Wausau have a lot of hope for the future, but they're not big fans of how the government is working right now.

This survey comes from Kids Voting USA. It shows 63 percent of Wausau high school students think people's votes matter. Almost 80 percent think they'll be able to find a full-time job someday, and almost that many plan to attend some type of college, according to the survey.

But when asked how the government is doing today, 44 percent think it's going in the wrong direction. Thirty-one percent of those polled had no opinion, while just 25 percent thought the government is moving in the right direction.

"It tells me that they care about their future, it tells me that they're confident, it tells me that they want to be a part of their community and that they do believe their voice and their vote counts," said Christy Powell, Wausau East social studies teacher. "That's huge."

Most high school students can't vote yet, but 60 percent of the students polled reported taking part in a kids voting election.

The survey was conducted in November. Staff at Wausau East and West and Wausau charter high schools helped with that.
