Gift creates new faculty position at UWSP

A two million dollar gift is boosting the wildlife program at UW-Stevens Point.

Gerald and Helen Stephens gifted the college the money in memory of their son, Doug. Doug was a graduate of UWSP in 1987. Doug died when he was 22. Educators say while Doug was leading a UW-Stevens Point research team in search bear dens when he suddenly collapsed and died.

Now, his family says there is no way to better honor his spirit than through a gift to the university he loved.

The money will fund the university's first endowed faculty position in the wildlife management program.

"It will bring resources to what already is an outstanding, nationally known program, shining even brighter. We'll have the resources faculty members will need for research, for student research," said Chancellor Bernie Patterson.

Patterson says a nationwide search will begin to fill the position. They're hoping to have someone in place in the fall.
