US to migrants: crossers won't qualify for reform

MEXICO CITY (AP) - The United States is warning migrants thinking of crossing the border that they won't qualify for any potential immigration reform that might be passed next year.

The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that would provide a path to citizenship, but it only covers those who entered the country before Dec. 30, 2011.

Republican leaders in the House rejected the Senate bill and are still mulling their own measures.

The assistant secretary of International Affairs for the Department of Homeland Security said he can't say for sure whether immigrant smugglers are encouraging migrants to cross before the reform.

But Alan Bersin said Wednesday the smugglers are unscrupulous and aren't above making such promises.

The U.S. Embassy DHS attache said migrants shouldn't let themselves be swayed by false promises.
