John Muir Middle School celebrates fundraiser success

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Students and staff in John Muir Middle School in Wausau are celebrating the turnout of their annual Star Wars fundraiser. Grades competed against each other, earning stars for coins and food that they collected.

Geri Heinz, the Parent Partnership Coordinator, says the students raised more than $2,600.

The school split the amount evenly between The Women's Community and the Salvation Army and presented checks to the non-profit groups in an assembly Friday morning. The students also raised about a ton of food for The Neighbors' Place.

"It's just a special time for students to learn how important it is to give back to the community," said Heinz. "That's a lifelong skill. That's a lifelong opportunity for them to be a better person."

This was the sixth year John Muir Middle School held the fundraiser.
