Granite Peak attracts national travels ahead of Christmas

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - It's a busy time of year at Granite Peak. Officials there say skiers and snowboarders arrived this weekend from across the country.

"A lot of families coming in from all over the state, as well as Chicago and Minneapolis, all of our wonderful neighboring states and cities," said Chris Pingel, the snow sports education director at Granite Peak.

Pingel said they expected about 3,000 visitors per day this weekend. They expect about 2,000 visitors on other weekends.

Many are families on a pre-holiday vacation.

The Garener's, from Chicago, had to take a break after a double black run.

"I did pretty good on it," said Jon Garener.

He said the conditions were great.

"It's like you're skiing on powder," said Garener.

There's a lot of powder to ski on. Officials here say the constant cold has helped them make snow.

"We're way ahead of schedule compared to last year," said Pingel. "The cold temperatures haven't really stopped. Right now they're reasonably pleasant. That helps us make a lot of snow.

But the fresh snow Saturday night made it even better.

"It's just enough light snow to make it real fun and easy to maneuver," said Nick Sowka, who brought his family from Minneapolis to ski.

Granite Peak officials expect holiday travelers to keep them busy through New Year.
