More than 50 dogs surrendered to Merrill shelter

MERRILL (WAOW) - Lincoln County Humane Society officials are asking for help after they received more than 50 dogs in a matter of hours Saturday. Leaders at the Merrill shelter say the dogs' owners gave them up. Sheriff's officials confirm the home was not condemned.

Volunteers are still trying to determine ages and breeds of many of the dogs. They know the dogs range from 2 weeks to 8 years old. They also know some of the breeds include Australian shepard, teddy bear, chihuahua, and small poodles.

Now they need supplies and donations to care for the animals. They are asking for donations of blankets, bedding, bleach, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, and canned dog food.

They are also asking for monetary donations to cover veterinarian fees. Humane Society leaders say the dogs are in good health but they need vaccinations. Leaders estimate the cost to spayed and neuter all of the dogs will be about $8,000.

"We are going to have to have vet inspections done before they can even go into foster homes," said Liz Friedenfels of the Lincoln County Human Society.

Friendenfels says they still need to process legal work before the dogs can be adopted. LCHS is accepting applications in the meantime.
