Snowmobile trails to open in Marathon County

WAUSAU (WAOW) – There's a Christmas Day gift for snowmobile riders in central Wisconsin.

The 884 miles of trails in Marathon County open at 8 a.m. Wednesday, coordinator Jon Daniels said Monday.

We got more miles than any other county in the state,” he said.

The trails remain closed to all-terrain vehicles.

Trail intersections have been renumbered, Daniels said.

Last season, the trails opened Dec. 31. Two years ago, the trails didn't open until March 2 and closed five days later, Daniels said. Three seasons ago, the trails opened Dec. 23.

According to Daniels, since 1991, the snowmobile season in Marathon County has been scrapped just once - the winter of 2001-2002. The length of the season has ranged from just five days in 2011-2012 to 96 days in 1996-1997.
