Cold Wis. temps leading to more burst water mains

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Madison Water Utility is asking residents to look for signs of water issues that could indicate frozen or burst water mains.

A WISC-TV report says utility crews spent much of Tuesday repairing at least six water mains that burst due to subzero temperatures.

Utility officials say they've been dealing with more breaks than usual this year. Part of the problem is the sudden cold that sent temperatures this week as low as minus 12 degrees. Another factor is the lack of deep snow cover that would otherwise insulate the ground.

The utility asks residents to call if they see signs of water issues. They include a sudden loss of water pressure, water bubbling through the pavement or large standing puddles of water that would normally be frozen.
