Egyptian authorities arrest Brotherhood members

Posted:
Authorities in Egypt are carrying out arrests today of members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The move follows yesterday's government declaration that the Brotherhood is a terrorist group. Officials of Egypt's interim government are warning that people who hold leadership posts in that group could now find themselves facing a death sentence.

The state news agency says 16 Brotherhood members were arrested in a Nile Delta province on charges of belonging to a terrorist group. Another 54 were arrested on accusations that they attacked police stations or incited violence.

The terrorist labeling of the Brotherhood takes to a new level the government's move to crush the group. Its members included Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who was removed from power in July by the military after massive protests against him.

Today's arrests came as a bomb exploded in a busy intersection of Cairo, hitting a bus and wounding five people. The blast raised fears that a campaign of violence by Islamic militants that has targeted police and the military could turn to civilians.
