Ice castle brings crowds to Eagle River

EAGLE RIVER (WAOW) - Construction has begun on a winter landmark in Eagle River and it's attracting big crowds.

The ice castle is a tradition going more than 80 years. The Eagle River Fire Department helps build the castle with more than 4,000 blocks of ice from a local lake. The design of the castle changes every year. City leaders say people from all across the country come to see it.

"It's a terrific event,” said Craig Moore, the Eagle River Historical Society president. “It brings people in from all over the Midwest. You know the chamber loves when we have it because it brings people to town."

The castle also lights up at night. With the right weather, the castle shouldn't melt until March.
