RHINELANDER (WAOW) -
A New Years Eve celebration with a violent ending now has some answers. Rhinelander's police chief says the incident at Sackett's Bar involved a fight between James R. Tanner, 48, and another man.
"They were standing between the pool table and the bar area," said Rhinelander Police Chief Michael Steffes.
The chief says the two were having a friendly conversation, but when the man approached the bar's DJ, Tanner punched him. Then the DJ stepped in.
"He took a hold of Mr. Tanner and directed him into the bar area,” said Steffes. “At that point, he took him and turned and directed him to the ground."
The bar's owner called the police and paramedics also arrived. The other man, 62, was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital and later released. The chief says Tanner was in worse shape.
"They got him out to the ambulance and attempted to give life saving support to him but he passed away," said Steffes.
Police say the district attorney is trying to help answer some questions about what exactly happened. As of now, no one has been charged.
"Once we get all of our reports, get all the witness statements, and get information from the autopsy, then we'll forward all information to district attorney for a prosecuting decision," said Steffes.
The police chief says the cause of Tanner's death is still under investigation. He says autopsy results should be completed in one to two weeks.
