Wausau dog torture trial delayed until March

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The trial of a Wausau woman accused of torturing, poisoning and killing her boyfriend's dog and writing about it in her diary has been delayed about two months, according to court records.

Sean Janas, 21, has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of animal abuse involving her boyfriend's dog, Mary, a four-year-old Labrador-shepherd who died in June 2012.

Her four-day trial, which was set to begin Jan 21, is now scheduled to start March 17, Marathon County online court records said Thursday. Pretrial conferences were also set for Feb. 3 and Feb. 17, the records said.

Prosecutors say Janas kept a diary about systematically torturing the dog and about her "intense hatred" for it.

Among the allegations against Janas is she poured Drano and bleach down the dog's throat and stabbed it with a knife, according to the criminal complaint.

Janas' arrest and media reports of what happened to her boyfriend's dog sparked much attention. Hundreds of protesters, some with dogs, marched outside the Marathon County Courthouse in October 2012 during a hearing for Janas. Circuit Judge Greg Grau earlier denied a defense request to move the trial because of publicity about the case.
