Christmas music firestorm report released

Posted:
WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Wausau School District released a 20-page on the Christmas music firestorm on Friday.

The controversy was about banning religious music from a Wausau West holiday concert. The report says the school district was contacted in 2009 by the Freedom of Religion Foundation. The foundation complained that religious songs were sung at Wausau West High School's graduation in 2008.

The report also says that the school superintendent and the school board president attended a 2012 Wausau West winter concert and felt it focused too much on the celebration of Christmas. The report says a year ago, school administrators decided to more closely review songs being song at music programs.

The Master Singers of Wausau West and its director Phil Buch were at the center of the firestorm.

The report says that last February an attorney for the Liberty Council wrote a letter to the school district on Buch's behalf, raising questions about a directive that Buch change his music repertoire for a spring concert. The Liberty Council advocates for religious liberties.

The report says that in October, attorneys for the school district and Liberty Council met and came to an agreement on the songs that the Master Singers could perform during the last holiday season.
