Police: Car thefts increase during cold days

With frigid temperatures underway you're more likely to warm up your car before getting in.

But, you may want to be a little more careful about what you leave in it while it heats up.

Police say even in the safest neighborhoods, car theft can happen to anyone. In Eau Claire, the police department reported more than 200 cases with break-ins and about 50 others that involved with stolen vehicle parts.

"One of the biggest thing in our city and every community is people doing the basic common sense things. They need to protect themselves and their vehicle," said Kyle Roder of the Eau Claire Police Department.

Roder says thieves will more likely look for multiple cars within close proximity to each other. They will also try opening car handles first to check if it's unlocked.
