UWSP stays open despite cold

Despite the extreme cold some schools remain open.

While most UW Stevens Point students are on winter break, about one thousand are still on campus taking classes. Educators say they considered closing but decided to keep the school open. They say it was for the best interest of the university.

"For us it's a safety issue. Safety is our number one concern. I think if we were looking at a situation where we had grade school kids, as the public schools had, where you couldn't be sure that people would be keeping their hats and coats on, things of that sort, that we might have closed. But, for our student population we felt it was safe to operate," said Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Greg Summers.

Summers say they did send out a note to students and faculty warning them about the dangers of the extreme cold and offering tips to stay warm.
