Central Wisconsin schools reopen, but not playgrounds

Posted:
WAUSAU (WAOW) - School is back in session for central Wisconsin, after almost all districts canceled classes Monday and Tuesday.

Students may be headed back to class, but not to the playground. School leaders, like Principal Mike McMahon of Hawthorn Hills Elementary School, say the cold is still too harsh for outdoor recess.

"I think it's good to keep kids safe," said McMahon. "We want parents to know that we're focusing in on weather and we're focusing in on keeping kids safe, and if it's too cold, we're not sending them outside."

McMahon says the school holds recess indoors whenever the temperature or wind chill dips below zero.
