Granite Peak reopens

Posted:
RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - Granite Peak in Rib Mountain is open again to skiers and snowboarders. General Manager Vicki Baumann says the site closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the cold temperatures.

"It's very dangerous for both skiers, snowboarders and very dangerous for our workers as well," said Baumann.

This was the first time in 12 years that the site was closed due to the cold.

She says the closure affected about 100 people who had already bought passes.

"We called them all and we let them know what was taking place and they [rescheduled] to another weekend or they moved it back a few days," said Baumann. "They were so understanding because the cold snap isn't just here in Wausau, it's all over the midwest."

One snowboarder says he had to adjust his plans, but he wasn't about to let the weather get the best of him.

"We planned this ski trip awhile back," said Nick Hoskins, a skier. "We're Wisconsin boys. We know how to handle our cold, so it's not that much of a factor out here."

To combat the near zero temperatures, skiers say they wore a few extra layers, while riding the slopes on Wednesday.

"This is probably the first time we're wearing our jackets actually," said Jake Glaser, a snowboarder. "Usually we just go in our sweatshirts, but now we have sweatshirts and jackets on."

Workers at Granite Peak say the warm weather coming this weekend is a good omen.

"We are looking for a very good weekend because of the weather [and] due to the cabin fever that you know everyone's feeling right now," said Baumann. "They're going to want to go outside and enjoy the nice weather as well."
