Athlete of the Week: Mosinee's Tyler Sondelski

Tyler Sondelski is a three-sport athlete. From soccer in the fall to pole vaulting in the spring and basketball in between.

Our Athlete of the Week isn't as tall as his coach says he is. But in some ways, his performance reaches new heights.

"I know we have him listed on the program as 5' 8"," Mosinee's head coach Andy Bruess said. "He gets mad at me because he says 'Coach, I'm only 5'-5" and I tell him,  'no one is smaller than 5' 8" in our program.'"

Tyler Sondelski may not be the tallest guy on the Mosinee basketball team. But what he lacks in height, he makes up in power.

"I like to go in and just get the job done I guess," Sondelski said.

The Indians' senior also pole vaults and plays soccer. Both sports have molded him into a unique athlete.

"You can see a ton of his soccer in his basketball," Bruess said. "His feet are great. He's an explosive player even though he's 5-5, he plays like he's 6-2 because he gets off the ground so fast and gets his hands up."

"I can jump a lot, that helps for pole vaulting too," Sondelski said. "A lot of people think being short, I'm probably not a good basketball player. I like to try and be my best and do what I can."

His best landed him on this week's Top Five plays on Newsline 9.

"My grandma called and told me to watch," Sondelski said. "I didn't even know there was top five plays then I kinda watched, I was looking online, couldn't find it. I watched the news and there it was. That's pretty awesome."
