Man accused in park attack pleads insanity

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A Wausau man accused of attacking a woman at a park changed his pleas to insanity on Thursday.

Robert Woods, 33, was charged with four felonies, including strangulation, suffocation with threats to injure and attempted robbery in the July 24 attack. He was charged as a repeat offender because he's been convicted of at least three misdemeanors in the past five years, according to court documents.

Marathon County Circuit Court Judge Greg granted Woods' request to change his plea to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and ordered that Woods be evaluated by a mental health expert, online court records said. With an insanity plea, Wood claims he was unable to know right from wrong at the time of the incident.

Police said a woman was trying to leave a Wausau park when Woods came up behind her and threw her to the ground. Authorities say he tried to strangle her and pushed her down an embankment.

The woman resisted and was able to get his license plate number as she called 911, police said.

Woods is free on a $25,000 cash bond.
