Firefighters respond to house explosion and the cold

TOWN OF WAUSAU (WAOW) - On the scene of the house explosion in the town of Wausau, first responders are reacting not only with the scene at hand, but they're also battling the cold.

It was -23 degrees when firefighters arrived Thursday morning. When it's that cold, water and equipment can freeze. Fire officials say they didn't have any issues Thursday morning. Their biggest concern was staying warm.

"Even a glass of hot chocolate, it makes a big difference just to have that kind of to build you up," said Town of Wausau Fire Department Captain Kevin Baumann.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services provided crews with snacks and drinks. Officials say firefighters also took turns inside cars to stay warm.

One volunteer, Colleen Hilber, says she's happy to help.

"We've gone through quite a few cups of coffee and hot chocolate," said Hilber. "Just trying to keep them warm. If we don't then, we are going to lose our responders and then where are we all going to be."

Fire officials also say while the bomb squad searched the property, firefighters stayed a safe distance away from the home.
