MERRILL (WAOW) – A band instructor at Merrill High School has resigned just days after the school received a complaint about some “inappropriate interaction” with a student and police looked into it, Superintendent Walter Leipart said Friday.
Matt Callope, 27, resigned for “personal reasons” and the school board accepted the resignation Tuesday, Leipart said.
Merrill Police Chief Ken Neff said Friday that police received an anonymous complaint Jan. 3 that Callope was involved in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl based on some messages that someone saw or heard.
“We collected some electronic evidence,” he said. “They did have phone contact and personal contact between them but nothing sexual in nature that we can show. There is no evidence of any illegal conduct.”
Leipart said Callope, who has taught at the school for four years, was placed on paid administrative leave Jan. 3. The superintendent called Callope's resignation unexpected.
“Our current band staff will continue to meet the needs of the program,” he said.
