Former UW-Marathon County dean dies

WAUSAU (WAOW) – Jim Veninga, the dean of the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County for eight years, died Friday at his home in Texas, a school official said. He was 69.

Veninga led the two-year school from 2000 to 2007 and helped strengthen the connection between the college and the community, Dean Keith Montgomery said. Under his leadership, minority enrollment grew from 4 percent to 13 percent.

Jim was a visionary leader with a deeply held belief in the transformative power of the liberal arts for individuals and in the contribution of the liberal arts to the well-being of society in different ways,” Montgomery said.

Veninga, who was born in Milwaukee, lived in a suburb of Austin, Texas, and suffered from cancer for about two years, Montgomery said.

He is survived by his wife Catherine and a daughter.
