Ice fishing event brings thousands to Rosholt

ROSHOLT (WAOW) - Ice shacks and drills filled Lake Helen Park in Rosholt, as the Rosholt Blizzard Busters held its 24th fishery.

"Ever since they started the fishery, I've been coming here every year, "said Dwayne Dobbe of Rosholt.

Fishers of all ages were ready to hit the ice.

"I think it's really really fun," said Samantha Simonis of Rosholt.

Simonis was on ice right away. After a while, she was in luck and caught five fish.

"I was really excited," said Simonis.

She was ready to hang her prized fish with others before going back on the ice.

But the fishing isn't the only thing attracting visitors. The event has activities for families too.

"We try to family orientate it for everybody," said Diane Matysik, the Blizzard Busters secretary.

Besides fishing, the event had food, a DJ, and games. They also raffled bicycles to children.

"This year we're giving away 15 bikes so that's always fun for the kids," said Matysik.

Some of the raffles went toward cash prizes. Donations came from local businesses and members of the club. Organizers say the event wouldn't happen without the support of the community.

"I think the people of Rosholt really look forward to it and also in the surrounding community," said Matysik.

This community comes back every year, hoping to find that perfect catch.

Organizers say about 3,000 people attended the fishery. The club donates part of the proceeds to charities like the American Cancer Society.
