Antiques Appraisal Roadshow

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Marathon County Public Library hosted an antiques appraisal road show Saturday. An appraiser gave estimates for people's items, ranging from tapestries to tea sets.

Appraiser Mark Moran says owners are always curious about the value of their items.

"They just want to know if the story is true, that they've heard all their lives," Moran said. "Sometimes it is and sometimes the story grows in the telling."

Moran inspected items including a tapestry, an urn, and even a drum.

After evaluating each piece, he would then show the owners similar items and their worth online.

"It's always a kick when I'm able to find an identical example in an online search because I only have just a few minutes to look up an item," said Moran.

Curiosity got the best of Barbara Schilling, who received a painting from a friend.

"It went pretty well," said Schilling. "He said that it was a bigger drawing and he appraised it anywhere from $300 to $400."

This item she says, though, will be staying off the market.
