Marathon County highway crews prepare for snow

Some Marathon County highway crews spent the day Monday getting ready for snow by removing existing snow from roads.

A team of the snow removal experts gathered on Camp Phillips Road in Weston.

They used graders to remove snow piled up the road. Then a second grader pushed the snow into the road so that a snowplow could pick it up and put it in a dump truck.

"We are moving the snow so we can make room for more. Even if it doesn't snow it clears the way for snow that melts so it doesn't clog up the drains," said Marathon County Highway Supervisor Kris Baguhn.

He says highway crews have used more than 8,300 tons of salt so far this winter. He says that is a little above average.

With more snow expected to fall he asks motorists to use caution and give the plows plenty of room to do their work.

"They will generally let you pass is there is a line of traffic behind them. Don't crowd them because if the roads are bad you aren't going to get there any faster. Just take your time and get there safe," said Baguhn.
