The top-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team won its 15th
straight game to start the season, the best start to a season in 116
years of UWSP men's basketball, with a 58-30 win in a low-scoring
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) game on Wednesday
night at Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse.
The 15 wins in a row to start this season eclipsed the 14 straight victories by the 2002-03 team that finished 24-4 overall and won the WIAC Championship.
Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) was the only player on either team to score in double figures, tallying 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting for the Pointers (15-0, 6-0 WIAC). Tillema also added seven rebounds and four assists. The Titans (5-9, 1-5 WIAC) scored the first five points of the game but shot just 23.9 percent from the floor, 17.6 percent from three-point range and 35.7 percent from the free-throw line in the game.
After the 5-0 start for UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point scored 23 of the next 29 points of the game to lead 23-11 with six minutes remaining in the first half. Over the stretch, the Pointers held the Titans to 2-for-12 shooting and six turnovers in over 12 minutes of play. After taking the lead with 13:10 left in the first half, UWSP never gave it back.
UW-Stevens Point took a 30-17 lead into halftime with Tillema scoring 13 of his 20 points before the break. The Pointers defense continued to control the game in the second half, as UWSP held UWO to two points in a stretch of nine minutes to establish a 30-point lead.
The Pointers led by as many as 32 with six minutes remaining. UW-Stevens Point shot 46.9 percent in the game but shot just 6-for-19 from behind the arc and 6-for-12 from the free-throw line. Outside of Tillema's tenth 20-point game of the season, Joe Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln) chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.
UWSP outscored UWO 14-4 in the paint and 12-6 in bench points in the second half. All 15 Pointers players saw action in the game. Nine UW-Stevens Point players scored and 13 had at least one rebound in the game.
UW-Oshkosh was led by A.J. Mueller's eight points and five rebounds, while Jade Royston added five points and eight rebounds.
